5 Unconventional Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

Being mindful of our own mental health is the key not only to living our best lives, but giving us the energy and awareness we need to care for our loved ones. If you have tried the traditional methods but you are still having some mental health issues, then it might be time to try something new. Here are some unorthodox tips from Spiritual Journey Healing for how you can feel better in body and mind.

1. Work from Home More Often

If you are content with your job then the answer to better mental health may be to work from home. If you can do your job from anywhere, then ask your boss if it is possible. The lack of a commute will do wonders for your anxiety because when you can wake up later for work, then you can get the seven to nine hours of sleep that you need to thrive. On top of that, you can also spend more time with your family while doing the things that you love, and there is no better solution for declining mental health than that.

If you’re going to work from home, make sure you have a stand-alone home office in a distraction-free part of your home. If setting up an office requires some renovations, keep receipts for any work done and take before-and-after photos as certain upgrades can boost your home’s value.

2. Care for Your Body and Mind

Self-care has gotten a lot of press lately for good reason. When we take some time for ourselves, we feel refreshed and are able to enjoy life more again. There are no right or wrong ways to enact self-care. As long as it makes you happy and feel good, then you’re doing it right! You could choose to color, take a bike ride, make time for coffee with friends, or do anything else that makes you smile.

There is evidence that cultivating the mind/body connection can also be very rejuvenating, so consider adding massage, yoga, or meditation to your self-care routine. When you are able to calm your body and mind, you can truly relax.

Somatic therapy is another option you can try. It is a type of body-centered psychotherapy that uses movement and awareness exercises to help people become more aware of their emotions and bodily sensations. The goal of somatic therapy is to help people understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected. Somatic therapy can be an effective treatment for a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and eating disorders. In addition, somatic therapy can also help people who are dealing with chronic pain or stress.

3. Get a Pet

Sometimes, anxiety and poor mental health are the results of loneliness. If you don’t live near family or friends, then consider getting a dog or a cat. Pets are great to have around because they will be there for you through thick and thin. Plus, you can take them for walks which gives you the exercise necessary to get the blood flowing so you feel better overall.

4. Volunteer at a Local Organization

One surefire way to feel better is to volunteer at a local organization like a soup kitchen or the Salvation Army. When you help other people, you feel better as well because there is nothing like putting a smile on someone else’s face. Plus, you will work alongside other positive people and that happiness is contagious.

If there is a particular type of service or need that you are passionate about, consider starting your own nonprofit – especially if you don’t see that need being met in your area. It may sound intimidating, but starting a nonprofit corporation is not that difficult. However, you will need to make some important decisions in order to get it set up. It’s best to work with a formation service that can guide you through the process and ensure everything is filed according to your state’s regulations.

5. Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a changed state of awareness and increased relaxation that allows for improved focus and concentration. It also is called hypnotherapy. Hypnosis usually is done with the guidance of a healthcare provider using verbal repetition and mental images. During hypnosis, most people feel calm and relaxed.

Care for Your Whole Self

As you can see, there are many ways that you can improve your mental health and feel better overall. And doesn’t everyone want to feel better? Stress will always be a part of your life, but there are plenty of ways that you can manage it and be happier. Whether you start working from home, enjoy regular meditation practices, or start your own nonprofit, find the ways that are best for you to care for your body, mind, and spirit.
