The memories which lie within us not only tend to become erased as the years go by, but often they change, or even increase by incorporating extraneous features. – Primo Levi
Recently I met up with a few of my friends that I’ve known for more than 20+ years. The type of friends that although you may not have seen in a while, you tend to pick up where you left off seamlessly.
I was invited to my girlfriend’s grand-daughter sweet 16 party. Mind you, I’ve known my girlfriend since her son was 13 years old. Now HIS daughter turned 16.
At this party, I met up with people that I used to go clubbing with, and now their children are out in the clubs or married with children of their own. Where the heck did the years go?
Someone must have hit the fast-forward button. The years went somewhere between having my son and getting a colonoscopy.
Our conversation was at a minimum at our table. I wasn’t able to hear what they were saying since I thought the music was too loud. Who’s idea was it to have our table next to the DJ? To hold a conversation, we were either yelling at each other or using sign language. There was a point in the evening that I motioned for them to get closer and speak directly in my good ear to hear what was going on.
While a few were finding their phones to show photos of their adult children, others were fishing for their reading glasses.
One was complaining her shoes were too tight and another couldn’t wait to go home and put on her PJs. While the one beside me was mumbling, there was no booze. I caught a glimpse of a few yawning and it was only 9:30pm.
Good times. xo

Time just rolls on down the road, doesn’t it. My girls are 16 and 14. A former girlfriend of mine is a grandmother of four. How did that happen? Crazy, but it does. On the bright side, if we have few regrets and we’re happy with the life we’ve chosen, all is good.
This was great. Thank you for sharing your night with us.

Couldn’t have said it better…if we’re happy with a few regrets…life is good. Be well.

It reminds me of my own catch-ups with some good friends. Time doesn’t matter, nor is distance. It’s connection and trust that keep a friendship going, I think. A great read Bernice! 😊🌸

Thank you Isabelle. Connection and trust are two essential traits in a friend indeed.

funny — I think we get pickier because we know better what we like…

This sounds so familiar! We are almost empty nesters…and I ask myself how did that happen!

I know your sentiments. When your youngest leaves the house you’ll experience a mix of emotions and maybe do the happy dance once in a while. 😉

Bernice I couldn’t agree more. Youngest one gone and older one only home some nights…I love seeing them embrace independence and I enjoy the sense of freedom & occasional happy dance! I’m not the clingy type but I was slightly shocked at how easy the tears can surface also!

I have just written a post about friendships that you can just pick up where you left off even though 20 years has passed. They are the good ones and good to keep in contact.

I love those friends you can just click again even though you’ve been apart. Having a friendship is hard when you have limited time.

It does require care amongst the years. It was good seeing them again.
